FROM STRAW-FREE OCEAN TO ZERO-WASTE LIVING.
Doing our part to save the planet.
DITCHING OUR TRASH CAN
Progressing Towards A Zero Waste 2019
For as long as I can remember I have always been an avid recycler. There is just something about giving a piece of waste a whole new life that I find very exciting. My husband is so supportive of my love of recycling and adding to the piles, but recently it seems that we are acquiring SO MUCH. This realization inspired me to rethink the “reduce” part of the waste hierarchy. Recycling takes a lot of resources as well, so reduction is the key.
A few months ago, I was inspired through social media to join the Stop Sucking movement, pushing to end the use of plastic straws. As much as I have always been a recycling fanatic, disgusted by trash, I was also an avid straw user. It never occurred to me that every plastic straw I use ends up sitting in the landfill (or the ocean). How did I never make that realization? Each day I refused a straw in public, I felt empowered. Small changes are the key to making progress! From there, I started researching the zero waste lifestyle and found so many helpful resources, which inspired me to join in on the fun.
So here we are…
For the rest of 2018 I will be examining what we throw in the trash (or recycle excessively) to determine how I will eliminate each type of waste. Although I have a lot to learn, I am very excited to share my journey along the way.
